This five-day school will provide Iowa Law Enforcement Academy certification as a Precision Driving Instructor. Successful completion of this class will provide ILEA Instructor Certification for 3 years expiring on 12/31/2027.  Through this school student will be certified Instructors under 501-4.2 and will have the ability to certify officers under 321.231(4) and 321.231(B)(1)(c), lead in-service (continuing education) trainings, and assist as a guest instructor at Law Enforcement Academies in Iowa.

PLEASE NOTE: This class registration utilizes a wait list for all registrants. Candidates will be selected by the instructor before the dates. Registering does NOT guarantee acceptance into the class.

Required Equipment:

  • Pursuit rated squad car in good working order.  Must have emergency lights.
  • Spare tire
  • Measuring wheel
  • Reflective vest
  • Laptop
  • Duty belt with training weapon (red gun)
  • Flashlight

Prerequisites: According to new Iowa Code rules, all officers applying for ILEA Instructor status must have 3-years of certified work experience.

NON-Sworn Personnel ONLY (Jailers, probation officers, etc):

  • All non-certified law enforcement personnel will at a minimum have one-year experience with their agency prior to becoming an instructor and will not be a probationary employee. Supporting documentation is required. In order to attend an instructor class, you must provide proof of the following:
  • Precision Driving Instructor: (36) hours of previous Precision Driving/Defensive Driving instruction.
  • Certificates issued after the previous training was completed indicating the type of training, the instructor’s name, date and location of the training and numbers of hours, or a letter signed by your department’s hiring authority or training officer on department letterhead indicating the type of training, the instructor’s name, date and location of the training, and the number of hours are required documentation.

Cost: $625.00
Agency will be invoiced after class concludes. ILEA does not accept pre-payment at this time.
