Expandable Baton Instructor School

This eight-hour course will provide instructor certification for the expandable baton. Officers will be instructed in force management and straight baton curriculum, and will be tested by a written and practical examination. An Iowa Law Enforcement Academy instructor certification will be issued upon successful completion of the class. Required clothing and equipment will consist of a Department Training Polo or T-Shirt, BDU style training pants, athletic shoes with good lateral support, duty belt with baton and holster ballistic vest, mouth and groin protection and handcuffs. No sweats or shorts please. Students must have completed a basic user baton class prior to attending this course.

As per new Iowa Code rules, all registrants for ILEA Instructor schools must have a minimum of 3 years experience as a certified officer with their agency.

**All non-certified law enforcement personnel will at a minimum have one-year experience with their agency prior to becoming an instructor and will not be a probationary employee. Supporting documentation is required. In order to attend an instructor class, you must provide proof of the following:** ASP or Expandable Baton Instructor: (7) hours or more of previous ASP or Expandable Baton instruction from an Iowa Law Enforcement Academy certified ASP or Expandable Baton Instructor. Certificates issued after the previous training was completed indicating the type of training, the instructor’s name, date and location of the training and numbers of hours, or a letter signed by your department’s hiring authority or training officer on department letterhead indicating the type of training, the instructor’s name, date and location of the training, and the number of hours are required documentation.

This will provide a valid certification for three years, expiring 12/31/2026.

Please note that meals are not provided at the Academy.
