Job Title: Fort Madison Police Department School Resource Officer (SRO)

Position Type: Full-Time
Salary Range: 65,053-69,103 (Hiring Bonus of up to 10,000$)
Hiring Bonus for Currently Certified Police Officer for School Resource Officer: Up to $10,000 hiring bonus to any certified peace officer who successfully completes the hiring process, accepts a position with the City, and whose certification is from the State of Iowa or a state that the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy recognizes and has a reciprocal agreement with.
Lateral Transfer: New employees, who at the time of hire, are currently certified law enforcement officers and have appropriate sworn experience as stated below are eligible for lateral transfer if they meet the conditions outlined in Iowa Code.

Position Overview:
Fort Madison Police Department is seeking a dedicated and experienced School Resource Officer (SRO) to serve as a sworn law enforcement officer and a positive presence in our school community. The SRO will work collaboratively with school staff, students, and local law enforcement to promote a safe and secure learning environment while building strong relationships with students and families.
Key Responsibilities:
Maintain a safe and secure environment on school grounds.
Serve as a liaison between the school and local law enforcement agencies.
Respond to and investigate incidents occurring on school property.
Provide law enforcement presence during school hours and at extracurricular events.
Educate students and staff on safety, legal issues, and conflict resolution.
Assist with emergency preparedness planning and drills.
Build positive relationships with students, promoting trust and respect.
Act as a mentor and role model for students.
Qualifications:
Certified law enforcement officer with IA POST certification or obtain within 12 months of hire if transferring from another state law enforcement agency.
Minimum of 2 years of law enforcement experience, preferably working with youth.
SRO certification or willingness to obtain within 12 months of hire.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with school staff and administrators.
Understanding of adolescent development and behavioral issues.
Background check and clearances as required by law.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience as a School Resource Officer.
Training in de-escalation techniques, crisis intervention, and restorative justice.
Knowledge of school safety best practices and emergency response protocols.
Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday, aligned with the school calendar.
Occasional evening and weekend duties for school events or emergencies.
