PLEASE NOTE: This class operates on a waitlist.  Signing up for this school does NOT guarantee you a spot; you will receive an email if your registration is approved. As per the updated Iowa Code, all ILEA Instructors must have a minimum of 3 years working as a certified officer before attending an instructor school. If you do not meet these new minimum requirements, your registration will not be approved.

This course will give instructor candidates the skills to establish and operate a departmental firearms program, and successful graduates will receive ILEA Firearms Instructor certification.  Topics to be covered will include:

  • Weapon safety
  • Principles of marksmanship
  • Diagnosis and correction of shooter-induced problems
  • Coaching techniques
  • Semi-automatic pistol and shotgun ballistics
  • Range management
  • Program development and documentation
  • Liability reduction
  • Post-shooting trauma management
  • Student presentations for instructor development

In order to provide sufficient training in all of these areas, the course length has been increased to 48 hours.  Training will be from 0800-1800 Monday-Thursday, and 0800-1700 on Friday.

Class enrollment will be limited to 24 certified Iowa Law Enforcement Officers.  Instructor candidates will be required to fire a qualifying score of 90% on the handgun marksmanship course for admission.  Visit https://ilea.iowa.gov and click “Firearms Course of Fire” under the “Training” menu to find the current required courses of fire and target information.
