This is a rigorous five-day course which will provide an instructor certification in the area of defensive tactics. Required clothing and equipment will consist of department training Polo’s or T-Shirts, BDU style training pants, athletic shoes, duty belt, training weapon if available, ballistic vest, mouth guard, groin protection and handcuffs.  This will provide a valid certification for three years, expiring 12/31/2025.  No sweats or shorts please.

Eligibility Requirements: After review with the Attorney General’s office of Administrative Rule 501-4.1(4), and consultation with our in-house Instructors who develop the content for the Academy’s Instructor schools, the following criteria will apply to all non-certified law enforcement personnel who wish to attend specialty Instructor courses. The criteria are effective May 1, 2018. All non­certified law enforcement personnel will at a minimum have one-year experience with their agency prior to becoming one of the listed instructors and will not be a probationary employee. Supporting documentation is required. In order to attend an instructor class, you must provide proof of the following:

Defensive Tactics Instructor: (36) hours or more of previous Defensive Tactics instruction from an Iowa Law Enforcement Academy certified Defensive Tactics Instructor.

Your agency will be billed after the course. ILEA does not accept prepayment at this time.
