This five-day school will provide Iowa Law Enforcement Academy certification as a Bike Patrol Instructor. As a Bike Patrol Instructor, graduates will have the ability to certify other officers as Bike Patrol Officers and operate a departmental bike program. Bike specific topics will include: bike nomenclature, maintenance, running a bike unit, bike handling, roadway safety, obstacle clearing, nutrition and fitness, patrol procedures, arrest tactics, legal issues, community oriented policing, and night patrol. This course will also include elements of instructor development. These topics include: scenario development, learning strategies, effective feedback, and dealing with training challenges. Students will be taught how to instruct their own bike patrol certification courses.

Prerequisites include prior certification as a bike patrol officer. Additionally, the student must be in good enough fitness to complete the course. This course is rigorous and the student will spend the majority of the course riding a bike in multiple different environments and conditions. This school grants a certificate good until 12/31/2025.

Equipment needed:

  • Police mountain bike (recently serviced)
  • Bike helmet
  • Front and rear lighting
  • Bike gloves
  • Water bottle
  • Saddlebag
  • Whistle
  • Duty belt, vest, red gun (for scenarios) firearm with at least 150 rounds.
  • Replacement bike tire tubes.  Make sure they’re the proper size for your bike.
  • Reflective uniform or clothing

Cost: $300
